ArmInfo. Armenia will choose a Western development path if Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan wins the parliamentary elections, stated Viktor Vodolatsky, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration, and Relations with Compatriots, in an interview with Lenta.ru.
In this vein, he discussed the circumstances that could push Armenia to withdraw from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
"The commitments he made when signing the agreement in France to sever all relations with Russia and fully embrace the Western platform are one thing. The second is the Armenian parliamentary elections. If Pashinyan wins a majority, then, naturally, Armenia will choose a Western development path," Vodolatsky said.
According to him, Armenia is following the path taken by Ukraine and other countries serving European interests.
"Armenia is following the path taken by Ukraine and other countries that are now appendages of Europe, serving its interests. Pashinyan is awaiting elections. All his decisions depend on how the elections go: withdrawal from the CSTO, ceasing work in the CIS, and many other nuances he will make if his party wins," Vodolatsky emphasized.
As a reminder, Armenia has been boycotting CSTO events since the end of 2022. In February 2024, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declared that Armenia had effectively frozen its participation in the CSTO, as the organization had failed to fulfill its obligations to Armenia, which could not go without consequences. And on September 18, 2024, at the Second Armenian World Summit, Pashinyan declared that the CSTO poses threats to Armenia's security, its continued existence, sovereignty, and statehood.
