ArmInfo. The Green Climate Fund Board has approved a new national program for Armenia: "Enhancing National Adaptation Capacity to Climate-Induced Natural Hazards through Strengthening Monitoring and Early Warning Systems," as noted in a statement issued by the RA Ministry of Environment.
According to the source, this initiative, with a budget of approximately $10 million, is the first GCF funded adaptation program in Armenia and will be implemented by national entities, including the National Institute of Hydrometeorology and Monitoring and the National Center for Hydrometeorology and Monitoring, under the coordination of the RA Ministry of Environment. The project aims to establish a modern, people-centered multi-hazard early warning system by modernizing hydrometeorological observation networks, strengthening forecasting and data collection systems, improving warning dissemination, and introducing anticipatory action mechanisms.
The initiative is fully aligned with the UN's "Early Warnings for All" initiative, supporting the shift from reactive response to anticipatory, risk-informed action.
As noted by GCF Regional Director Thomas Eriksson: "Investments in people-centered early warning systems will protect lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure in the long term, as climate hazards become more frequent and intense. This initiative also reflects GCF's commitment to strengthening national ownership and being a trusted climate partner for Armenia."
This marks another important milestone in Armenia's climate finance journey, strengthening cooperation with the GCF and delivering tangible impact for the country.
