Azerbaijan is eager to deploy Russian peacekeepers in the Karabakh conflict, hoping to seize a piece of the Karabakh land with Russia's help, Aghasi Yenokyan, Head of the Center for Political and International Studies, says when commenting on the escalation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and on the line of contact of the Azeri and Karabakh troops.
He thinks that the drop in oil prices has sharply deteriorated the living standards in Azerbaijan. Baku realizes that it has the last chance to unleash war. Yenokyan is sure that Russia is also interested in escalation and it seeks to deploy a limited contingent of troops in the conflict zone.
The war will last as much time as needed for deployment of Russian peacekeepers, Yenokyan says. "So, Russia will get serious political dividends without any serious costs," he says. He noted that earlier Azerbaijan was totally against the presence of the Russian peacekeepers, but now it hopes to seize a piece of Karabakh land with Russia's help. The expert also thinks that Armenia may agree to deployment of the peacekeepers. "It is necessary to make Russia understand that the world community will not let it resolve the Karabakh conflict alone," says Yenokyan.
