The April aggression has brought Baku to a military and political deadlock, ex-defense minister of Armenia, Lt.-Gen. Vagharshak Harutyunyan said at the Caucasus-2015 international conference in Yerevan.
"The only positive result for Aliyev was the 800 ha, which is part of the line of contact between the NKR and Azerbaijani troops. I won't deny that these territories are of certain importance to defense. However, the military and political losses of Azerbaijan from the April aggression are much bigger that the importance of the 800 ha," he said.
Harutyunyan thinks that such results of the April aggression demonstrated the Azerbaijani army's inability to resolve the Karabakh problem in the military way, even by means of up-to-date weapons.
He said that Baku's attempts to politically and militarily blackmail the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs to change the content of the talks failed. As regards the Co-Chairs' proposal to create investigative mechanisms along the line of contact, Baku accepted that proposal, then rejected it and then accepted it again, Harutyunyan said.
"And finally, the April aggression of Baku made Yerevan tighten its negotiation positions. Earlier Armenia was ready to make a compromise and cede territories in exchange for a status for Karabakh, but now Yerevan will make no concessions until Baku specifies its reciprocal concessions. So, today Azerbaijan lacks the opportunity to resolve the conflict in the political way. And no one will let it settle the conflict in the military way," the military expert said.
