ArmInfo. First Deputy Chairman of the Russian State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots Konstantin Zatulin believes that strengthening Armenian-EU relations will require a revision of Armenia's membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
Thus, commenting on the European Parliament resolution on the need to strengthen ties between the EU and Armenia, Zatulin, in particular, said: "This will require a review of Armenia's membership in the Eurasian Economic Union and the agreements concluded within the framework of this union with the participation of Armenia. The fact that the members of the European Parliament passed a resolution weeks ago calling for a victory of Ukraine in order to de-imperialize, decolonize and re-federalize Russia, that is, to collapse Russia as a state, decide to invite Armenia or push it to do so.
Obviously, they view Russia as an enemy. The invitation to Armenia is not related to the value of Armenia itself for the European Union, but to the desire to take advantage of the situation and the behavior of Pashinyan's government to cement Armenia's reorientation from Russia to the West. Pashinyan's government is following this path, and this is a game by the European Parliament," he said.
Zatulin added that in this situation the EU is using the Russophobic behavior of the Armenian authorities. "Quite recently, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia once again talked about the European aspirations of Armenia. In this case, we are talking about a game of giveaway on the part of Armenia and the European Parliament. They advertise their intentions against the backdrop of the refusal of allied obligations of Armenia and other countries in the post-Soviet space, first of all, Russia. In this case, this whole action based on Russophobia is trying to benefit from the behavior of the Armenian authorities, who are betraying Russian-Armenian relations," he said in an interview with "Moscow Speaks" radio station.
Notably, on March 13, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for support for Yerevan's desire to apply for candidate status for EU membership. The Armenian leadership welcomed the resolution of the European Parliament. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the public should discuss this topic, noting that the government has the "political will" to continue cooperation with the European Union.
