ArmInfo. The National Progress Party will not take part in tomorrow's extraordinary meeting of the Council of Elders of the Yerevan Municipality, during which a vote will be taken to deprive the mandate of a member of the Council of Elders of former Mayor of Yerevan Hayk Marutyan and other oppositionists.
This is stated in the official statement of the party. "National Progress" issued a statement due to reports circulating in the media and social networks that "Civil Contract", with the help of law enforcement agencies, is putting pressure on some members of the "Public Voice" faction, forcing them to vote in accordance with the wishes of the ruling party at tomorrow's extraordinary meeting.
We consider political persecution of any force or person, or coercion in one way or another to influence the vote of a council member, extremely unacceptable. In this regard, we remind you that similar signals of pressure were received in December 2021, when "Civil Contract" sought to remove Hayk Marutyan from the post of mayor at any cost," the source says.
The party also recalled that already during the short work of the Council of Elders of this convocation, the "Civil Contract" also exerted various kinds of pressure on members of the opposition factions, starting with various arbitrariness and ending with a shameful fight organized by the heads of "Civil Contract" municipalities in the corridor of the Municipality.
"Therefore, we expect clear clarifications from law enforcement agencies regarding today's alarms of repression against members of the "Public Voice" faction. We also appeal to the Human Rights Defender with a request to conduct an investigation into the signals received and inform the public about the results," the statement says.
Tomorrow members of the National Progress party will be in the municipality, but solely for the purpose of communicating with the public, including through the media.
