ArmInfo.Talks about Armenia's "nonaligned status" are a propaganda ploy with a number of targets, believes Doctor of Political Science Vahe Davtyan.
Thus, regarding the statements made in Yerevan about the possible non-bloc status of Armenia, the expert stated that currently no one is calling Armenia anywhere.
"Neither in the EU, nor, especially, in NATO. Consequently, talk about the country's 'non-bloc status' is a propaganda ploy, pursuing several goals at once.
Firstly, realizing that Armenia will not receive any security guarantors from the West, and obligations to create the most uncomfortable conditions for Moscow have been accepted for a long time, Yerevan is trying to play diversification. They say that we are for European integration, for developing dialogue with NATO, but we understand that the official policy aimed at membership in Euro-Atlantic structures (obtaining candidate status, etc.) will create unnecessary tension in relations with Moscow. With serious national security risks for Armenia itself," Davtyan believes.
In his opinion, the addressee of conversations about "non-alignment" is, first of all, Moscow. Davtyan believes that the goal is obvious: to neutralize the openly pursued anti-Russian course in the absence of any guarantees from the EU and Washington. The situation is stalemate, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to sit on two chairs.
"Secondly, the current authorities of Armenia have an extremely low rating. The crisis of legitimacy may further worsen in the event of another aggression by Baku, the likelihood of which is increasing day by day (against the backdrop of Pashinyan's pacifist statements, Aliyev calls Armenia "Western Azerbaijan"). Consequently, already Today it is important to prepare the ground for arguing for another strategic fiasco.
The formula will most likely be as follows: statements about "non-alignment" were made in order to minimize possible risks, which, in turn, kept the West from supporting Armenia, but Yerevan had no other choice, given that Armenia is in an incorrect, one-vector security system , built by the previous authorities. I think, however, that this time there will be very few listeners of this old record," Davtyan said in a conversation with Russian expert Abbas Juma.
Earlier, Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan spoke about the possibility of Armenia becoming a non-aligned country.
