ArmInfo. The Artsakh National Assembly elected Samvel Shahramanyan as President of the Republic of Artsakh on Saturday.
22 of the 23 MPs participating in the parliament sitting voted for Shahramanyan, who had been nominated for president by three parliamentary factions.
The election came after Arayik Harutyunyan stepped down as Artsakh president on September 1. He also dismissed State Minister Gurgen Nersisyan and named Shahramanyan as his replacement after relieving him of his duties as Security Council secretary.
A constitutional amendment enacted in March empowered the Artsakh Parliament to elect a new president in case of the incumbent's early resignation.
