ArmInfo. We expect that the UN Security Council will take appropriate decisions following the relevant discussion, Ambassador-at-Large of Armenia Edmon Marukyan said on the air of the Public Television, touching upon the expectations of the Armenian side from the UN meeting scheduled for August 16 on the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.
For example, according to Marukyan, a decision can be made to provide humanitarian assistance through the UN Humanitarian Office, send a fact-finding mission, adopt a resolution on the implementation of an interim decision of the UN Court, which will once again require Baku to comply with a legally binding decision of the ICC.
According to the Ambassador, the Security Council has a large set of tools. It is another matter which of them will be applied and whether it will be applied at all, and what conclusions will be drawn from the discussion, he added.
To the remark about the justification of Yerevan's expectations from the upcoming discussion, given that during the December 2022 discussion in the UN Security Council on the issue of the reopening of the Lachin corridor, international actors already made quite targeted statements calling on Baku to open the corridor, but the latter not only did not follow the calls, but also completely closed the road, Marukyan admitted that Azerbaijan is taking actions opposite to what the international community specifically calls on it to do.
As the Ambassador-at-Large pointed out, Yerevan still hopes that this time the key actors, led by the United States (the latter took the helm of the United Nations Security Council for the month of August, ed. not), will make decisions appropriate to the situation. Marukyan noted that today the RA has unequivocal conclusions of well-known human rights organizations - Human Rights Watch, a group of UN experts, the report of the ex-Prosecutor of the ICC Ocampo on Azerbaijan's intention to commit genocide and ethnic cleansing in Artsakh. "In this sense, there is pressure on Azerbaijan and it is intensifying," he said.
Marukyan also touched upon the latest flow of disinformation, organized by Azerbaijan, about the alleged accumulation of troops by the RA Armed Forces on the border with the Azerbaijani side, calling it the basis for organizing new provocations. At the same time, according to him, it is not very likely that a provocation will occur on the eve of the UN Security Council meeting, but "this is a lever of pressure in the hands of Azerbaijan."
