ArmInfo.Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Wednesday expressed hope that Armenia would "react positively to the remarks" of Baku on the peace agreement.
"Some time ago, we submitted our proposal, which is based on the norms and principles of international law. We received comments from Armenia. In response, we sent them our comments. So the process is underway, and we hope to see the same strong political will from Armenia ", Aliyev said in a press statement after meeting with Latvian President Egils Levits, Turan reports.
He expressed hope that Yerevan would make "the right decision" and "won't try to buy time, as it was during the "occupation"," which led to the war.
"Unfortunately, we had to do it by force. Although we could have done it by political means if Armenia behaved constructively," Aliyev said proudly, inspired by the inadequate reaction of the international community to Azerbaijani aggression, which in the future gave rise to new military attacks and the constant threat of the use of force by Baku.
"Therefore, Baku expects that Armenia will not waste time and respond positively to Azerbaijan's proposals, which are supported by many international actors," he said, without specifying which actors he was talking about. Then he assured that Baku believes that the page of hatred must be turned. However, he "forgot" to specify why they did not reopen the Berdzor corridor and why they did not stop the provocations in Artsakh and the territory of the Republic of Armenia.
Then, he spoke in favor of creating a peaceful South Caucasus, and take an example from the experience of close cooperation between the Baltic countries.
Levits, for his part, noted that Latvia, as a member state of the European Union (EU), is interested in close cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan. He also noted that the Embassy of Latvia performs the function of NATO coordinator in Azerbaijan, and this mandate will be extended until 2024. "I see that Azerbaijan and NATO have a mutual interest in closer cooperation on security issues," the Latvian president added.
As for the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Riga stands for a settlement based on international law. "And international law means the territorial integrity of countries: A sustainable peace can only be achieved if it is based on international law and territorial integrity," said Levits.
