ArmInfo. Citizens of Armenia and Georgia can now cross the border with identification cards, the presence of a passport will not be mandatory. On March 9, the Armenian government approved a draft law on ratification of the Agreement between the Republic of Armenia and Georgia on mutual visa-free travel for citizens of both states.
The justification for the project notes that the agreement was signed on January 12, 2023. It implies that citizens of Armenia and Georgia will be able to visit both countries with identification cards. The goal is to make it as easy as possible for citizens of Armenia and Georgia to visit, to further strengthen direct contacts between societies.
According to the National Tourism Agency of Georgia, 562,000 Armenian citizens visited Georgia in 2011, and 1,365,000 in 2019. In 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, this number has significantly decreased, amounting to about 260.000.
Currently, there is a visa-free travel regime between Armenia and Georgia, established by the agreement of May 19, 1993. The latter will become invalid with the conclusion of a new agreement.
It should be noted that the citizens of the Republic of Armenia can stay in the territory of Georgia with identity cards for up to a year, and the citizens of Georgia - in the territory of the Republic of Armenia for a maximum of 180 days during the year. -
