ArmInfo.Only Armenia can put an end to the self-confidence of Azerbaijan and its leader, and this can be done by changing its behavior and concept at the negotiating table. This was stated on November 7 during discussions on the topic "Armenian agenda: continuation after the rallies" former Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Avet Adonts, referring to the results of the Sochi meeting of the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia.
The diplomat recalled that several years ago the head of the neighboring country expected Armenia to return at least two regions adjacent to Nagorno-Karabakh.
"Gradually, his appetites began to grow, and he demanded more and more territories. And as a result, he occupied almost the entire Nagorno-Karabakh. Now Artsakh is Azerbaijan. Moreover, Aliyev also invaded the sovereign territory of Armenia, ignoring the position and assessments of the international community," Adonts stated.
According to him, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev ignores almost everything: any assessment, any opinion. At the same time, he found it difficult to say that this is self-confidence or tyranny of the Azerbaijani leader.
"And in these conditions, we must change our position. I mean that, first of all, we must get rid of the defeatist complex that arose after the war of 2020. And for this, it is necessary that the authorities, with the support of the people, move forward with the involvement very ambitious ideas and programs. They must be put into practice. In particular, Armenia must improve the level and quality of its security. There is no way without it," the former Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia stressed, adding that without this step, one cannot change one's behavior.
Speaking about the concept, Adonts stated that its presence, where measures to improve its own security will be taken into account, would allow Armenia to become more resilient, purposeful and effective in negotiations.
"That is, the priority task of the Republic of Armenia today is to mobilize the necessary resources to resolve these issues, which should take into account national interests and "red lines"," he said, noting that among the national interests, of course, ensuring all the rights of the population of Artsakh, as well as the restoration of the lost regional role of Armenia.
The diplomat believes that in order to be successful in the diplomatic field during the negotiation process, we should first of all be the strongest. "Unfortunately, diplomatic efforts alone are not enough for successful negotiations. You need to be able to protect your own security. You need to be strong and have a predictable partner who has respect in the international arena," he concluded.
