ArmInfo. Amid the situation in and round Ukraine, the situation in the South Caucasus could well worsen, Fyodor Lukyanov, Editor-in-Chief of Russia in Global Affairs, said in an interview with ArmInfo.
"We are witnessing unprecedented instability in international relations, which does not rule out new hotbeds and conflicts. Moreover, we should be ready for any negative scenarios, especially in the present- day situation, which is fraught with new extreme dangers to Russia," Mr Lukyanov said.
The situation is rapidly developing in the different theaters of the Russia-West geopolitical confrontation, including the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. And Turkey is the "principal pathfinder" the West is using in its policy toward the Caucasus. Turkey is most active is all the fields to extend its own influence, make political capital and, therefore, enhance its geopolitical role.
On the other hand, Turkey is most cautious, mainly acting by means of Azerbaijan, doing its best to maintain normal relations both with the West and with Russia, which, Mr Lukyanov believes, is evidence against Ankara wishing to unleash a new full-scale war in the South Caucasus. In its turn, Baku is seeking an advance in Nagorno-Karabakh, while Yerevan is attempting to form a new basis for its own actions in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.
"They are doing it to get ready for possible radical changes in the situation in the region. The unpredictable situation in Ukraine allows any scenarios to unfold in the South Caucasus, with Russia's special role. Yerevan appears to be preparing for the Ukraine scenario unfolding not in Moscow's favor by deepening its relations with the West. I should say that the escalation in the region is not at all in Russia's interests. Moreover, it poses a considerable threat to us," Mr Lukyanov said.
