ArmInfo. In the process of normalizing relations with Turkey, the Armenian leadership, which is in a state of self-deception, makes mistake after mistake. Moreover, for completely incomprehensible reasons, it wants to see things the way it wishes instead of how they are and tries to make it all a reality. Founder and Head of the Modus Vivendi Center Ara Papyan expressed a similar opinion to ArmInfo.
"The same plans to commission the railway connecting Armenia with Azerbaijan through Meghri are nothing but self-deception. Yerevan thinks that as soon as the railway starts working, Armenia will become stronger not only economically, but also in terms of ensuring security. At the same time, while the very thesis that the presence of trade ties between states prevent wars is erroneous. As a rule, wars always start between countries with close economic interaction," he stressed.
In Papyan's opinion, even today the closed border in terms of logistical possibilities does not prevent Armenia from exporting its goods to Turkey, especially in the context of limited production of competitive goods. According to his forecasts, the open border may lead to the dumping of Turkish goods in Armenia in order to conquer the local market.
According to Papyan, in exchange for all these "open" roads, Turkey and Azerbaijan will demand from Armenia not roads, but a corridor that which will be controlled by anyone except the Armenians themselves. Moreover, Ankara is well aware that it will be much easier for them to find common ground with Moscow, if only because control over the "corridor" is also in Russia's interests. The essence of the "corridor" logic Papyan reduces to the desire of Turkey and Azerbaijan to divide Armenia into two parts.
Meanwhile, according to the analyst, the "corridor" through Meghri will create serious problems for communication with Iran, and taking into account the fact that the population of Syunik is already small, the Turks will eventually do everything to reduce it. For example, offering local residents to buy their houses for double the price. Turkey and Azerbaijan will spend significant resources on these long-term programs and goals for the" slow" destruction of Armenia. And this is in conditions when we do not develop a policy to counter this, moreover also try to adapt to it," he stressed.
Papyan is convinced that neither Ankara nor Baku actually show any desire or political will to achieve peace with Armenia. But Yerevan continues to think about the opposite, stubbornly not wanting to see levers of pressure, with the help of which it is possible to achieve concessions from Turkey on the same issues of demilitarization and unblocking the region.
"When I talk about the same Woodrow Wilson arbitral decision, I mean exactly that, and not the nonsense attributed to me. We need to take this document and confirm our rights in an international court. Which in itself will become a weapon in our hands, forcing our opponents to concessions. What does the term "joint opening of borders" mean? By accepting this term, we already automatically recognize that the borders with Turkey are closed, including through our fault. While this is absolutely not the case, and we should talk exclusively about lifting the Turkish blockade from Armenia," Papyan summed up
