ArmInfo. It seems that it would be better for Armenia to take a break in its current relations with Turkey. Director of the Caucasus Institute Alexander Iskandaryan expressed a similar opinion to ArmInfo.
"Without a doubt, problems with neighbors should be resolved. But in this particular case, the situation for Armenia is complicated by a single point of view, the consolidated position of its opponents - Turkey and Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, Armenia today is far from being in a state that can allow us to negotiate with the Turks on equal terms and defend our interests. And if in the course of "football" diplomacy Yerevan could say "no" and put an end to it, today Armenia is deprived of this opportunity, "he noted.
In such conditions, the chances of success of Armenia in the process with Turkey, in the opinion of the political scientist, depend on how the geopolitical game goes, since Yerevan is unable to rely on its own forces. That was the derivative result of the defeat in the 44-day war, as, actually, everything that is happening today both in the foreign and in the domestic policy of Armenia.
Yerevan and Ankara announced negotiations towards achieving normalization of relations. Ruben Rubinyan, a 31-year-old board member of the ruling Civil Contract party, Vice-Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly, has been appointed Armenia's special representative in these negotiations with Turkey. Turkey will be represented by a 63-year-old Turkish diplomat, former Turkish ambassador to Lebanon, Japan, the United States, former secretary of the Turkish Security Council Serdar Kilic.
Commenting on the current level of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Iskandaryan noted that Baku failed to solve its problems through the war, and the Artsakh issue continues to remain part of the international agenda. At the same time, the solution of border problems between Armenia and Azerbaijan, in his opinion, is directly necessary for everyone, including Russia, which is forced to do this. "And of course, the issue of communications. Moscow seeks to unblock them and thereby, through the establishment of economic ties, reduce tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan. At the same time, neither the Turks nor the Azerbaijanis need it. In this whole process, they need one single road through Syunik, which should not be controlled by Yerevan. "Zangezur Corridor" is far from the economic interests; it is a purely geopolitical project. And we perfectly see that today Azerbaijan does not open, but closes roads in order to exert even more pressure on Armenia," Iskandaryan summed up.
