ArmInfo. For the first time in its history, Armenia is entering the process of normalizing relations with Turkey, having satisfied all the demands of the Turkish side. This is the opinion of Suren Sargsyan, a political scientist and an expert on America.
In his words, Artsakh has been handed over to Azerbaijan, international recognition of the Armenian Genocide has been de facto removed from the Armenian foreign policy agenda, and a new demand, the opening of a corridor, will also be satisfied in the near future
"By the way, in 1992 Turkey set a condition for Armenia to remove the following paragraph from the Declaration of Independence:" The Republic of Armenia supports the process of international recognition of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire and Western Armenia in 1915. "Another condition was to remove the symbol of Mount Ararat from the coat of arms of the RA Armed Forces, since it was considered as a territorial claim against Turkey, "Surenyan said.
The expert believes that during the development of the new Constitution (pay attention to the initiative of Nikol Pashinyan) this issue may also be resolved, say, by founding a fourth republic and adopting a new declaration, etc.
At the same time, the political scientist believes that now Armenia and Turkey will sign documents on the establishment of diplomatic relations, in which the Armenian side recognizes the territorial integrity of the Republic of Turkey and the inviolability of its borders, and fixes an abstract formulation on the Armenian Genocide in Erdogan's style of "common tragedy".
"Turkey will not have any restrictions on the part of Armenia in the upcoming negotiations, but some restrictions will be on the part of the mediating states. At the moment there are two of them: the United States (see the Bloomberg leak) and Russia (see the request of the Armenian authorities for mediation)", - Sargsyan summed up.
On December 13, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Ankara and Yerevan will appoint special envoys to discuss steps to normalize relations between the two countries. The Turkish Foreign Minister also announced the resumption of charter flights between Istanbul and Yerevan in the near future. Cavusoglu stressed that Ankara will act in coordination with Azerbaijan regarding steps to normalize relations with Armenia.
Yerevan welcomed this statement by the Turkish Foreign Minister. Thus, press secretary of the Armenian Foreign Ministry Vahan Hunanyan, in particular, stated: "Armenia has always been and remains ready for the process of normalization of relations with Turkey without preconditions, which is enshrined in the program of the Government of Armenia. In this regard, we assess positively the statement of the Foreign Minister of Turkey on the appointment of a special representative for the normalization of relations, and confirm that the Armenian side also will appoint a special representative for the dialogue".
Career diplomat who also has experience in the Turkish National Security Service, former ambassador to Washington Serdar Kilic will conduct the negotiations from the Turkish side and Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Ruben Rubinyan from the Armenian side.
