Co-chairs of the Support Group for Armenia in the US Congress Frank Pallone, Gus Bilirakis, Jackie Speyer and Adam Schiff called the current ceasefire conditions in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone, imposed on Armenia by Turkey and Azerbaijan, "untenable." In this regard, the congressmen called on the Trump administration to resume participation in the OSCE Minsk Group process to achieve a settlement in Artsakh based on the fundamental right to self- determination.
They also called on the United States to provide humanitarian assistance to the Armenian population and assistance in demining to ensure the safe return of the Armenian civilian population to their homes in Artsakh.
At the same time, in a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the congressmen noted that "the United States cannot allow the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh to be determined and controlled exclusively by Turkey and Russia," and called for the deployment of international peacekeepers to monitor the ceasefire. She also pointed out the need for international recognition of Artsakh's right to self-determination. "Without this recognition, they [the Armenians of Artsakh] will continue to face the threat of displacement by Azeri and Turkish troops without any opportunity for formal reparations," the leaders of the support group said.
The co-chairs of the Armenian group also called on the State Department to "re-evaluate" the US policy towards Turkey. "We must learn from the failures of our reconciliation policy towards Turkey and use all available diplomatic tools to punish these attackers for their aggression and abhorrent human rights violations," the congressmen said, while reproaching the administration for inaction in the face of growing threats from outside.
