ArmInfo. By the decision to recognize the Golan Heights as a part of Israel, US President Donald Trump has demonstrated willingness to return to the practice of recognizing existing borders. One of the foundations of the Helsinki Final Act of the CSCE, signed in 1975. Israeli public figure, political scientist Avigdor Eskin expressed sush opinion to ArmInfo.
US President Donald Trump signed a proclamation recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights on March 25 as part of Trump's Washington talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Syrian Foreign Ministry praised the decision of Trump as blatant. In turn, the European Union and Russia voiced their intention not to recognize the Golan Heights as part of Israel.
"The Geneva Convention and a number of other agreements signed as a result of World War II in their time put the things right-any changes to the borders required the consent of the conflicting parties and the decision of the UN Security Council. We are well aware that the Karabakh conflict cannot end in such a scenario - Azerbaijan will never accept this. However, by its decision on the Golan, the US president actually announced the US readiness to recognize the existing borders for the sake of security. That is very important for the future recognition of Artsakh's independence, "Eskin findes.
In his opinion, in the light of similar trends observed in global politics, Yerevan should think about steps towards these trends. Including recognition, even in the long run, of the Golan Heights as part of Israel. According to the political scientist, this line will allow Yerevan to demand from the world community a full legal status for 100% of Artsakh by Armenians, up to its recognition, not least with the support of the USA and Israel, part of Armenia.
