ArmInfo.. The program of the Government of Armenia, at least its foreign policy bloc, reflects the constructive position of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and the My Step bloc towards Russia. President of the Scientific Society of Caucasus Studies Alexander Krylov expressed such an opinion to ArmInfo.
On February 6, the Armenian government published a draft program and foreign policy priorities of the country for 2019. There are practically no conceptual changes in foreign policy priorities in the program for 2019 compared to similar programs in recent years. Thus, Armenia will still not have strategic relations with any other country in the world besides Russia.
"After the actual ten-year status quo in the South Caucasus, determined by the South Ossetian events, which set the geopolitical configuration of the region to Western, Eastern and Pro-Russian, the situation in Armenia has changed. And after the change of power in Armenia, the situation could change in the region as a whole. Many saw in Armenia another manifestation of "color" revolutions that bring pro-Western forces to power, as was the case in Georgia and Ukraine. That is why in Moscow the Armenian changes were perceived, in general, negatively, "he said. Nevertheless, based on an analysis of the situation in Armenia, Krylov believes that with the change of power in the republic, the policy of Armenia in reality, on the contrary, has largely changed in the direction favorable for Russia. In particular, the tone of the overwhelming majority of Armenian media has changed significantly. And today, according to his estimates, the My Step bloc dominating in the Armenian parliament is taking real steps towards building relations with Moscow in a much more constructive way.
"In my opinion, in this light, it is simply impossible to ignore the position of Armenian new authorities related to Syria, quite favorable for Moscow. Yerevan's participation in stabilizing the situation in Syria, the intention to send sappers and medical personnel there, in this context, is very important. All this testifies to Armenia's support for Russian policy in Syria. Thus, the foreign policy priorities of the Armenian government for 2019 fully reflect Russia's real place in the politics of the new authorities, "the Russian political analyst concluded.
