ArmInfo. Armenia condemns any form of intolerance and violence against representatives of national minorities, Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Ararat Mirzoyan stated today in the National Assembly recalling the Baku events of January 1990.
According to the Speaker, the anniversary of the Armenian massacres in Baku is marked these days. "Our people, who throughout their history have faced such manifestations, have always rejected violence and intolerance against national minorities anywhere in the world," the Speaker stressed.
To recall, on January 13-20 in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, unrest began on ethnic grounds. They were accompanied by mass violence against the Armenian population, robbery, murder, arson and destruction of property. The victims of the pogroms, according to various sources, were from 90 to 300 people. According to the report of the Human Rights, the massacres were not spontaneous, since the rioters had lists of Armenians and their addresses. As a result of the excesses, military units of the Soviet army were brought into the city. According to eyewitnesses, the actions of the attackers were distinguished, as in Sumgait, by particular cruelty. People were thrown from the balconies of apartments in high-rise buildings, the crowd attacked and killed Armenians with iron bars and knives.
