ArmInfo.Armenia is one of the 10 most militarized countries in the world and the most militarized European country in 2017. This is evidenced by the data of the Global Militarization Index 2018, published by the Bonn International Conversion Institute.
The top ten include Israel, Singapore, Armenia, Cyprus, South Korea, Russia, Jordan, Brunei and Belarus. As noted in the report, it is these countries that allocate particularly many resources for military needs compared to other areas.
"Despite negotiations on a cease-fire after the bloody escalation of violence in April 2016, during the last two years, there were shootouts in the Nagorno-Karabakh region and one attack by an Azerbaijani drone. As a result of ongoing tensions in the region, Armenia (3) and Azerbaijan (12) continued to invest too many resources in the armed forces, "the report reads.
As for the other neighbors of Armenia, Georgia is on the 52nd place, Turkey on the 20th and Iran on the 22nd.
The report is based on data for 2017 and includes information on 155 countries.
