ArmInfo. The National Assembly gave its political assessment and showed that it is not hostage to the government. Armen Ashotyan, an MP from the Republican Party of Armenia, said this on October 29 in an interview with journalists.
According to him, in spite of all the attempts of the government to put pressure on the parliament, the National Assembly expressed its will. "I think Nikol Pashinyan should be very grateful to the RPA for being principled and not allowing such hasty changes to the Electoral Code to occur in Armenia, which is a member of the Council of Europe. Adopting such drastic amendmendments 42 days before the elections would throw Armenia and democracy many decades back , " the MP said.
He also stressed that this is a historical moment when one should be guided not by personal interests, but primarily by the interests of Armenia. "Perhaps such a decision is not favorable for some political forces, however, we are not here to serve Nikol Pashinyan's ambitions," Ashotyan stressed.
Referring to the advice voiced by political opponents to the RPA, Ashotyan said: "It's strange that everyone is now concerned with the interests of the RPA and advises us how to act in this or that situation. If Pashinyan was interested in our interests, then he shouldn't have to persecute Republicans. However, we were able to overcome all this, yes, we had losses, but the core of the party, the structure, the ideology remained, "the MP said.
At the same time, Ashotyan assured that the RPA has no decision on whether it will take part in the elections or not. Nevertheless, he believes that the RPA has a chance to get into parliament. "This chance must be used. There are people in Armenia who do not trust Nikol Pashinyan. Our goal is to awaken hope in these people," he said.
