ArmInfo. The issue of recognition of the Armenian Genocide is of priority importance for Armenia. The press secretary of the Armenian Foreign Ministry Tigran Balayan stated this during a briefing on June 5, commenting on the situation in the Israeli Knesset on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
According to the representative of the Armenian Foreign Ministry, the recognition of the crime of genocide is the process of supremacy of universal values and human rights confirmation, designed to exclude the repetition of new crimes against humanity regardless of internal political and geopolitical processes. "This issue is of top priority for Armenia, and we will continue to play a leading role in the efforts of the international community in this direction," he said, and in this context added that the dozens of documents adopted at various international venues indicate that the process of international recognition of the Genocide Armenians is irreversible.
To note, on May 23, the Knesset approved a proposal to hold a plenary discussion on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. However, the Speaker of the Knesset, Julius Edelshtein, withdrew the consideration of the parliament on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide in order to avoid embarrassment, since it was not clear whether the majority would support this decision.
It is noteworthy that Edelstein himself for many years, including last week, repeatedly stated that he supports the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. At the same time, the leader of the Meretz party, Tamar Zandberg, who made a proposal to the Knesset, accused Edelstein of putting politics above morality. "The Knesset must fulfill its promise, this is a matter of historical justice," Meretz leader said. It should be noted that discussions in the Knesset were initiated against the backdrop of the deterioration of relations between Turkey and Israel.
Moreover, Israeli Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Binyamin Netanyahu accepted the recommendations of the country's foreign policy department to postpone the discussion in the Knesset (parliament) of the bill on recognition of the Armenian Genocide until the completion of the early parliamentary elections scheduled for June 24 in Turkey.
