Armenian Ombudsman Arman Tatoyan in Strasbourg during a working meeting with the Director General of the Council of Europe on Human Rights and the Rule of Law, Christos Yakumopoulos, discussed issues related to the implementation of joint projects on torture and ill-treatment, the protection of the rights of persons deprived of their liberty, reforms related to restricting practices detention.
Touching upon the events in Armenia in April-May of the current year, Yakumopoulos stressed the important role of the defender of human rights in guaranteeing respect for human rights, as well as creating an atmosphere of tolerance. The parties agreed to continue strengthening cooperation.
On the same day, Tatoyan met with Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunya Mijatovic and spoke about the activities of the Ombudsman's office during the events in Armenia in April-May.
The meeting discussed issues related to the activities of the Office of the Ombudsman for the protection of human rights during protests, complaints related to police actions.
Mijatovic noted the importance of the role of the Ombudsman, an impartial professional approach, and effective work to protect rights and sound assessments.
