ArmInfo.The National Assembly of Armenia, at a meeting on February 27, began discussions on candidates for members of the Supreme Judicial Council, which, under the new Constitution, will replace the Justice Council.
The Supreme Judicial Council, which will become the supreme body of the judicial system of Armenia, will consist of 10 members, five of whom will be judges nominated from all judicial instances, and the other five are elected by the parliament. The parliamentary majority represented by the Republican Party and the ARF Dashnaktsutyun submitted to the Council members the candidacies of the current Chairman of the Constitutional Court Gagik Harutyunyan, former Minister of Justice Gevork Danielyan, lawyer Hayk Hovhannisyan, head of the Department of Civil Justice of Yerevan State University, candidate of legal sciences Sergey Megrian and assistant professor of the Civil right, Candidate of Sciences Liparit Melikjanyan.
According to the new Constitution, the Supreme Judicial Council, which shouldb to earn from April 9, is designed to guarantee the independence of the judiciary system. Members of the council are elected for a period of five years without the right re-election.
