ArmInfo. Settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict among the 12 main lines of the UN activities in 2018.
As the press service of the UN reports, the Secretary General of the Organization Antonio Guterres presented to the members of the General Assembly 12 main lines of the Organization's activities for 2018. Addressing them, he recalled that for the year of his work as Secretary-General, mankind had not progressed to peace. At the same time, he said, it is necessary to take advantage of globalization and the "fourth industrial revolution". Among the main problems to be addressed, the UN in 2018, according to the Secretary General - the settlement of conflicts in the Middle East and the "frozen" conflicts in Europe, the resolution of the refugee problem in Myanmar and Bangladesh, as well as the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.
Noting the increase in the number of conflicts, the head of the UN called the situation in the Middle East a "gordian knot", where many problems intertwined: these are the conflicts in Syria and Yemen, instability in Iraq and, of course, the Palestinian-Israeli question. The secretary general is alarmed by signs of a "weakening" of support for the Palestinian-Israeli settlement on the basis of the existence of two states. He stressed that there is no alternative to the decision on the two states. At the same time, Guterres called for an end to the "paralysis" that led to the "freezing" of conflicts in Europe. According to him, the countries of the continent possess the levers necessary to overcome these problems.
"In order to resolve these situations, it is necessary to resist the dangerous wave of nationalism and revive the work of the corresponding mediation initiatives, including the Norman format and the Tripartite Contact Group for Eastern Ukraine, the OSCE Minsk Group on Nagorno-Karabakh, Geneva International Discussions on Georgia and the Transnistria 5 + 2 Process" , stressed the head of the UN. Guterres strongly urged to move to a green economy and mitigate the effects of climate change. He recalled the need to take advantage of such processes as globalization, migration and the rapid development of technology. According to him, this will help to end the deepening inequality. The fight against terrorism, the protection of human rights, too, believes the Secretary-General, will not leave the agenda of the UN for 2018. Another two areas of the UN's activities: strengthening peacemaking and partnership with the African Union.
