ArmInfo. Numerous changes in the rules of traffic in the capital allowed to unload the streets and reduce the number of road accidents (road accidents). This was announced on November 22 at the press conference in Yerevan by the Chief of the Police Road Police Service, Police Colonel Yegor Karapetyan.
According to him, there are a lot of changes and they are caused by the increase in the number of transport in the country over the past ten years. "Over the past few years, more than 300,000 cars were imported to the republic, and more than half of them are in operation in Yerevan, and I would like to present those changes that, after much study and analysis, were introduced by the Traffic Police in the traffic regulations this year. So changes to the traffic rules for roundabouts have been introduced, now priority is given to vehicles in the ring, before those who entered the ring took precedence, which at times reduced the clusters at intersections and cuts about the number of accidents, "the head of the Traffic Police said.
According to him, the next innovation is the cancellation of traffic lights at the crossroads of the Republic Square, where the warning yellow light is constantly on. According to him, this step also allowed to unload traffic on the Republic Square. He also said that in 2018 it is also planned to raise the asphalt covering at pedestrian crossings on the Republic Square in 2018, where traffic lights with yellow light are burning, which will improve the safety of pedestrians, since drivers will be forced to lose speed when driving through this site.
"Another innovation is the increase in the number of lanes on the streets with high traffic. This innovation has allowed several times to increase the capacity of streets, reduce the accumulation of cars, and reduce the number of accidents. In addition, in 14 metropolitan streets the green light on the right section is constantly lit, another 12 are planned to establish appropriate rules after the completion of calculations and analyzes. This measure also contributes to reducing clusters of cars on the streets, "Karapetyan said.
At the same time, he stated that improving the visibility of traffic lights for drivers by 20-30% reduced the number of violations and accidents. The head of the Traffic Police informed that 11 pedestrian crossings with a raised 5-7 cm asphalt covering were constructed in the capital this year, where there are no controlled transitions, and in 2018 it is planned to take measures to provide such coverage on the remaining sites, as well as islands of security.
Karapetyan also informed that in July of this year a free "Hot Line" of 1-77 of the Traffic Police was launched, which can simultaneously receive up to 6 calls, and for which 200 to 250 calls from citizens on various issues per day.
He also said that work is underway to improve the movement for cyclists. According to Karapetyan, cycling will reduce traffic on the streets of the capital. In conclusion, he informed that the Road Police of Armenia will continue the calculations and analyzes to introduce new traffic rules in the streets of the capital with the aim of improving traffic.
