ArmInfo. Pedro Agramunt, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), resigned.
"Today, for personal reasons, I decided to leave the post of chairman in PACE", wrote Agramunt in his microblog in . Thus, he stopped the procedure of his impeachment, which was scheduled for October 9.
A member of the Armenian delegation to PACE, Samvel Farmanyan, responding to the resignation of Agramunt, wrote on his Facebook page: "For a long time, being de facto dismissed from the post of PACE head, Agramunt resigned: Thus, PACE shows signs of recovery, which is directly proportional to discontent Azerbaijan with this structure and the threat of Aliyev to leave the ranks of the Council of Europe ".
The issue of the resignation of Pedro Agramunt from the post of the head of the PACE has been raised repeatedly. For the first time, the issue of confidence in Agramunt was raised at a meeting of the PACE spring session. The reason for this was a visit to Syria and a meeting with President Bashar Assad. At the same time, a scandal broke out with the participation of the Italian parliamentarian Luca de Volonte, who received bribes from Azerbaijan in exchange for certain political services. In this scandal, the name of Agramunt was also widely discussed. The latter accused the Armenian delegation in all this, which, allegedly, is slandering him. However, the scandal was continued - recently scandalous facts about new corruption deals of Azerbaijan with European high-ranking officials flared outward. The case received the conditional name of the "Azerbaijan laundry", and in it, besides other major European officials, the name of Agramunt is again being discussed.
On June 27 of the current year, the report "Recognition and implementation of the principle of responsibility in the Parliamentary Assembly" was submitted for discussion at the PACE plenary session. The report, prepared by the Swiss deputy Lilian Mori-Pasquier, provides for changes in the internal procedures of the structure with a view to removing the president, vice president and chairmen of the PACE committees from their posts. After the speeches, the report was put to the vote and adopted. For him voted 154, against 30, abstained 13 people. After the adoption of this report, it was expected that the structure of Pedro Agramunt would be removed from office. However, the issue was postponed to the autumn session.
