ArmInfo. Moscow will try to deploy its own peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh at the earliest opportunity; President of Armenian Institute for International and Security Affairs (AIISA) Stepan Safaryan expressed this opinion to ArmInfo.
"April war demonstrated once again that Russia can carry out both mission of mediator and mission of peacekeeper in Karabakh conflict. In April we realized that Moscow will use its peacekeeping capacities and potential only during the escalations of Karabakh conflict. When and how Moscow will use this potential is not known but the fact of such a desire is evident", Safaryan noted.
The analyst commented also on the risks of establishment and possible actions of the Armenian-Russian joint military group and mentioned that it is unlikely that the group will be used against Azerbaijan in case it attacks Artsakh and even Armenia. In this context the analyst especially emphasized the fact of Russian command of the group during military actions as envisaged by the agreement. As of today Armenia's main problem is the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
In this light Yerevan's main task from the fist day of Armenian-Russian alliance and Armenia's membership in CSTO has been protection of Armenia from Azerbaijani aggression with the help of Russia and CSTO. In April we saw that neither Russia nor CSTO intend to protect Artsakh from Azerbaijan's aggression. In this light it is not clear from which risks the joint military group will protect Armenia, if not from the main risk", Safaryan summarized.
