ArmInfo. The US foreign policy will not change after Donald Trump's victory, MP Tevan Poghosyan told ArmInfo's correspondent.
According to him the US foreign policy does not depend on its president's caprice, consequently one should not expect radical changes from Trump. He noted that even the US Ambassador to Armenia admits it. ''The Ambassador stated that only 20% of US policy depends on president, most likely Trump will use his 20% at the beginning of presidency, after which the planned scenario will continue'', Poghosyan noted. He particularly recalled that the acting president of the USA Obama and his predecessors promised to recognize the Armenian Genocide, however did not keep the promise after becoming president.
Poghosyan also mentioned that during election campaign Trump was planning to toughen policy against Iran which is according to him is not beneficial for Armenia. ''He was also talking about possible cooperation with Asad's regime in Syria, which is positive however he had said nothing about relations with Turkey or Azerbaijan, consequently it is too early to forecast to what changes Trump's policy will lead in our region''.
At the same time Poghosyan noted that he does not expect any changes in the US stand on Karabakh settlement as well as recognition of Genocide.''Washington will continue its work within the OSCE Minsk Group and I do not think that Trump's victory will lead to change of the USA's stand on this issue'', he summarized.
To note, US Ambassador to Armenia Richard Mills touching upon possible changes in Armenian- US relations after the presidential elections stated that no matter which party wins presidential elections in the USA, the country's foreign policy will remain 80% the same. The USA will continue to fulfill its obligations to its friends and Armenia is surely among them. Providing assistance to Armenia aimed at its development into an independent, prosperous country living in peace with its neighbors will remain among the USA's priority issues. We will remain Armenia's stable and reliable partner and will continue joint work aimed at building prosperous Armenia, Mills said.
The final results of the presidential elections in the USA have not been announced yet, however Republican Donald Trump's victory is almost evident, considering that he has already won 276 electoral votes, while Hillary Clinton got only 218. Almost 56.9 mln people have voted for Trump and 55.8 mln for Clinton. The candidate from Democrats has already congratulated Trump by phone.
