New Armenia Front demands that CoE should condemn prosecution against Gevorg Safaryan

The activists of the "New Armenia" Public Salvation Front handed a letter to the Council of Armenia Office in Yerevan. The activists demand that the Council of Europe should condemn the prosecution against the Founding Parliament member Gevorg Safaryan and other arrested oppositionists. The activists also demand that international structures should impose sanctions on the Armenian authorities.    

To note, the administrative court of Center and Nork-Marash communities of Yerevan dismissed the motion of Safaryan's lawyer, who requested replacing the arrest with a recognizance release. However, the defense is going to dispute the court's judgment.    

Gevorg Safaryan was detained on 31 Dec 2015 following a conflict between the activist and the police in Liberty Square in Yerevan. On January 3, 2016, the activist was arrested for two months. The special investigation service instituted a criminal court over the conflict between the activists and the police, who are suspected to have abused office.
