ArmInfo. The Armenian authorities' actions against the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC) are just as unjustifiable as the unlawful trials of Armenian prisoners of war in Baku, as stated by Robert Amsterdam, a renowned American-Canadian international lawyer specializing in political advocacy and human rights, in an interview with the political analytical program "Status Quo."
He noted that he has never encountered a country where the authorities have sought so much to undermine their faith, history, and culture. "Christianity is under threat today. It's unlikely that in any other country we've seen anything like this-authorities demanding the resignation of senior clergy. This demand has no legal basis. When someone commits such legal violations, it should raise concerns in Europe," the lawyer emphasized.
According to Amsterdam, this issue is global in scope and affects more than just Armenia or Christians. He added that that it must be confronted, expressing outrage at the international community's silence amid these ongoing processes. He recalled the stance expressed by the Norwegian human rights organization Forum 18. Amsterdam expressed hope that other international human rights organizations will break their silence and follow suit.
"Even during times of war, freedom of religion must be ensured. It's important to understand that all of this is happening in Armenia-a country that has been at the forefront of defending Christianity. The international community must pay attention to the events surrounding the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC)," he added. Amsterdam expressed hope that the situation will be resolved through legal channels. He also mentioned the upcoming parliamentary elections in Armenia in June, as an opportunity for citizens to voice their opinions on attacks on the Armenian Apostolic Church by the Armenian authorities.
