ArmInfo. The European Union expects Armenia to be transparent in judicial proceedings against detainees, as stated by Petr Peruncik, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Czech Republic to Armenia, in an interview with Civilnet.
He assured that the EU is not viewing the arrests through rose-colored glasses and is closely monitoring the processes taking place in Armenia. "The European Union expects Armenia to adhere to international standards, especially in human rights matters. If the country fails to comply with the rule of law or international standards, we will speak out about it openly. After all, friends talk about everything, even problems," Peruncik noted. The Ambassador also acknowledged that there are people in their circles (the Ambassador did not specify who he was referring to - ed.) who remind them that what's happening in Armenia with the arrests is wrong. However, he said they are currently reviewing the details. "And we certainly expect that the proceedings against the detained individuals will unfold in accordance with European processes or international standards," the Ambassador concluded.
Earlier, international lawyer Robert Amsterdam had stated that the Armenian authorities are using funds provided by the EU for reforms in the country for personal gain. Specifically, as Amsterdam noted, to further the goals of the ruling Civil Contract party.
