USSR General Staff`s 1976 maps are very important in further  strengthening of Armenia`s independence and sovereignty: Pashinyan

ArmInfo.On May 22, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, during the government hour in parliament,  demonstrated the maps on which the process of delimiting the state border with Azerbaijan is carried out.

According to him, this is a copy of the 1976 map, which was used by  the Soviet General Staff and approved by the authorized geodetic  services of the USSR. The map was drawn up on the basis of the  borders between the Armenian and Azerbaijani SSRs ratified in 1969.    "These maps have a very important role in further strengthening our  independence and sovereignty, since they show de jure the borders of  the Republic of Armenia," Pashinyan noted.

As the Prime Minister pointed out, the RA authorities, based on the  results of long-term, careful work, reproduced the entire perimeter  of the republic's border on the basis of these maps.

It was according to the maps of 1976, the last maps of the USSR, de  jure having legal significance and having passed the "duty process"  in 1979, that delimitation with Azerbaijan was carried out in Tavush,  he noted.

Pashinyan once again accused his opponents of being against "real  Armenia" by opposing this process, according to the principles  proclaimed by the Cabinet of Ministers. According to the prime  minister, the latter is in confrontation with "historical Armenia,"  which, with its ideology, is a threat to the future of the Republic  of Armenia.

The opposition and, in particular, the Tavush for the Motherland  movement accuse the RA authorities of unilateral concessions and the  surrender of strategically important territories of the country.  Thus, according to the protocol-description of the commission on  delimitation and demarcation of borders, in the area of the village  of Kirants, Tavush region of the Republic of Armenia, Azerbaijan will  have to receive two houses, a bridge, a section of the interstate  road to Georgia and about 50 land plots.
