On November 18, activists held a demonstration in front of the building of the Armenian National Security Service to support Tseghakron Party Leader Shant Harutyunyan, who was arrested following the Nov 5 developments in Liberty Square. According to the demonstrators, they had information that the law-enforcers are going to send Harutyunyan to a mental health facility.
The demonstrators demanded setting Harutyunyan free. His son Shahen Harutyunyan said that his father suffered from no mental diseases and that the law-enforcers' methods applied against his father were illegal. Shahen also said that he had earlier been denied a meeting with his father, which evokes suspicions about possible use of violation against Shant Harutyunyan.
To recall, dozens of policemen and activists were injured as a result of the clashes that followed a demonstration organized in the center of Yerevan in support of activist Shant Harutyunyan, on 5 November. Over 20 activists have been detained. Fourteen activists are charged with Article 316.2 of the Criminal Code of Armenia (violence against a representative of the authorities) and are facing 5-10 years in prison.
