ArmInfo. British Minister for European Neighborhood and the Americas, Wendy Morton, has arrived in Azerbaijan.
The purpose of the visit is to participate in a meeting of the annual political consultations between Baku and London.
Morton is expected to meet with President Ilham Aliyev and Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov. The topic of the talks will be the situation in the region after the war in Karabakh, human rights, the role of women in society. During the visit, a memorandum of partnership in the field of environmental protection will be signed.
"Our two countries have strong ties in the field of contacts between people, culture and education. I look forward to meeting with President Aliyev and his government to discuss further areas of cooperation as Azerbaijan moves to renewable energy sources and recovers ecology after Covid-19 and the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The United Kingdom is working hard to promote women's rights, and I look forward to meeting inspiring women leaders who promote gender equality and the fight against domestic violence in Azerbaijan, "she said.
Morton also reported on the cooperation of the parties with the aim of signing the Istanbul Convention by the Azerbaijani government and the adoption of the National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security in order to advance the legal rights of women.
During the visit, the British Minister will also hold meetings with the ministers of ecology and energy of Azerbaijan and discuss with them ways to develop cooperation with Azerbaijan to switch to renewable energy sources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions ahead of the COP-26 summit in November this year in Glasgow.
In addition, the British minister will meet with the head of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Education to discuss the positive impact of the British Council's English language programs on the lives of young people, and will also take part in the British Council awards ceremony for graduates of leading British educational institutions in Azerbaijan, Turan reports.
