Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia, Minister of Territorial Administration Armen Gevorgyan has tendered his resignation, Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan said in the Government, Thursday. According to him, Armen Geovrgyan will continue his activity in the private sector, but will keep cooperating with the Government.
Meanwhile, it is widely rumored in the political circles that the reason of Armen Gevorgyan's resignation was reappointment of Suren Khachatryan as Syunik Governor. The latter was dismissed 1.5 year ago over his son's complicity in a bloody incident and murder. It is rumored behind the scenes that Gevorgyan refused to cooperate with Suren Khchatryan in the Government.
It is also rumored that Armen Gevrogyan - who occupied am important position under president Robert Kocharyan and is known to be "Kocharyan's man in the Government" - has stepped down as the deputy prime minister to help Robert Kocharyan return to big politics.
So far, the deputy prime minister's post is vacant. The probable candidates to that post are Gagik Beglaryan, Minister of Transport and Communications, and Gagik Khachatryan, Finance Minister.
