A group of environmentalists will gather in front of the Government building in Yerevan on Wednesday to express their protest against the shooting of wolves.
Head of the Birds Lovers Center Silva Adamyan has told journalists that there is a certain reason why wolves have begun to attack sheep: human activity has intervened in their biotopes and has left them with almost no prey.
Adamyan warns that the shooting of wolves may result in bad consequences as wolves keep woods clean by killing rodents and sick animals.
According to WWF-Armenia's survey in the Arpi community, local barns and cattle chutes are tumbledown and almost unprotected. "The absence of dogs and electric fences make the local cattle an easy prey for wolves," Adamyan said.
She notes that a number of wolf protection centers in the United States, Europe and Russia have expressed their support for the Armenian environmentalists.
Earlier the Armenian authorities increased the bonus fund for the shooting of wolves. Their motive is that they are receiving more and more complaints from villagers about wolves attacking their cattle.
