Armenia's Human Rights Defender Karen Andreasyan has sent a letter to Mayor of Yerevan Taron Margaryan concerning his decision to raise the public transport fare in the city.
Andreasyan says that such a rise is possible only following an official decree by a mayor.
"Have you signed such a decision? Have you made it public according to the law? If not, the rise is not legal."
"Have you fined the companies who raised the fare without your decision? If it was the operators' request to raise the fare, have you announced a tender for companies wishing to provide their services for 100 AMD?"
"It is inadmissible to raise a public transport fare without a preliminary public discussion. And it is even more blameworthy when such a decision bypasses the law. If this decision was passed in defiance of the law, those guilty must be punished and the people who paid extra money as a result must be given compensation," Andreasyan says in his letter.
