The cataclysms, shocks and calamities the mankind suffered in XX century once again demonstrate that genocide prevention should become one of the international community's priorities, Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian said in his closing speech at the Public and Political Global Forum Against the Crime of Genocide in Yerevan on April 23.
"If we want no recurrence of genocides, we should reveal the premises that led to the genocides. Unfortunately, the impunity of the criminals and perpetrators of the Armenian Genocide resulted in recurrence of that dreadful crime. The key lesson we should draw today is that the international community's hesitation, inconsistency, inadequate response, lack of political and legal conclusions give birth to new crimes," said Nalbandian.
One more important genocide prevention factor is enhancement of the efficiency of the human rights protection mechanisms. Consolidation of democracy, protection of the national and religious minorities' rights are the significant columns that lie in the basis of the process of eradication of extremist and xenophobic ideas. The minister expressed confidence that the ideas and the reports delivered at the forum will become a serious contribution to the international community's efforts towards prevention of the crimes against humanity.
