It is impossible to reform the transport field with the 100 AMD public transport fare, Mayor of Yerevan Taron Margaryan said during a meeting with the representatives of Barev Yerevan bloc.
He thinks the rise in the public transport fare will be a serious problem until preferential rates are fixed for the social groups. "I am seriously concerned with the transport safety problems, however, the 100 AMD fare cannot ensure the transport safety, because we cannot upgrade the fleet and satisfy the citizens' demands", he said. He added that it is necessary to seriously control the quality of the public transport service, particularly, to control the schedule and ensure the needed number of vehicles.
Margaryan also said that a special commission would shortly be set up to study and work out mechanisms to optimize the Municipality's decision. "The key emphasis will be put on the unified system of public transport fare payment, which will satisfy the needs of the vulnerable groups", he said.
To note, the activists protesting against the public transport fare rise have told ArmInfo that the protest actions will continue until the mayor declares his decision invalid.
