"SOS Sevan" initiative organized a picket in front of the Armenian Parliament earlier today, on 28 April.
According to ArmInfo's correspondent on the spot, the picketers demand the Parliament to cancel the Government-submitted bill that called to increase water releases from Lake Sevan.
"Our action aims to save the lake. We have facts testifying that additional water releases from the lake will result in water logging, " Silva Adamyan, Coordinator of the Environmental Public Bloc, told ArmInfo. According to her, fish production at the expense of water reserves is a wrong undertaking.
Earlier, the Nature Protection Ministry allowed fish farms to use 1.496 bln cu m of water, while renewable underground water reserves of the Ararat Valley is 1.226 bln cu m. In fact, 122 out of 638 Artesian wells ran dry and 6200 ha of lands are left without irrigation. To coordinate the situation, they offer increasing water releases from Sevan from 170 mln cu m to 240 mln cu m for 5 years.
