The leader of the Armenian National Congress party, first President of Armenia Levon Ter- Petrosyan has explained why there can be no Euromaidan in Armenia.
The key reason why Armenia's refusal to sign an association agreement with the European Union did not result in public disorders is that in Armenia people are not as anti-Russian as in Ukraine.
"Unlike Moldova, Georgia and Azerbaijan, Armenia avoided becoming anti- Russian after the collapse of the Soviet Union and this exactly helped us to preserve our territorial integrity and to liberate Nagorno- Karabakh," Ter-Petrosyan said.
One more reason, according to Ter-Petrosyan, is that in Armenia people are disappointed with the West and its double standards.
"In 2008 public protests in Armenia were much stronger that the recent events in Maidan but the West preferred defending the usurper Serzh Sargsyan. Had they prohibited Sargsyan to use force against his people, there would have been no victims," Ter-Petrosyan said.
He believes that Armenia needs its own Maidan. "We must fight not against accomplished facts but against those who have accomplished them. In Sept-Oct 2013 we were planning to organize an at least 50,000- strong rally but we didn't for fear that the other opposition forces would not join us and that it would become one more disappointment for the people. But I am still convinced that very shortly the regime will made publicly accountable for all it has done," Ter-Petrosyan said.
