Tbilisi.
The public
movement "Patriots" has begun collection of signatures under the
petition in Facebook social net to support acting President of Georgia Mikheil
Saakashvili.
"We begin collecting signatures to
support Mikheil Saakashvili. Pursuant to the
Constitution of Georgia, he is constitutionally elected President till
October 2013 and it is anti-state and anti-constitutional step to raise in
question his legitimacy, besides, it is disrespect to the greater part of the
population of Georgia that elected Saakashvil
President of the country. In our opinion, people, demanding President's
resignation, inflict a direct damage to Georgian statehood and violation of the
Constitution. Proceeding from it, we have begun collecting signatures among
people, who whom the Constitution and the law are of supremacy", is said
in the statement.
January 20 is a deadline for collection of
signatures.
It should be noted that signatures for
Saakashvili's resignation have been being collected in Georgia for two months n the initiative of
some public and political organizations.
According to organizers of this action, over 800 thousand signatures have been
collected. During last days some rallies
of protest with demand of President's resignation were held in the capital of
Georgia outside the Presidential Residency in Avlabari district. The protestors
promised to begin permanent rallies from
January 20 until Saakashvili resigned.
Organizers of the protest rallies consider that if Saakashvili (elected
on January 5, 2008) remains President of Georgia till October 2013, it will violate the five year term,
stipulated by the Constitution.
