The construction of the multi-storey building in Komitas Street has been suspended. Tigran Khzmalyan, well-known filmmaker, member of the Preparliament civil initiative, has told ArmInfo that on Monday morning the workers made an attempt to puddle concrete, however, they were given the goose by the local residents and eventually left the construction site. At the moment, the Preparliament activists are guarding the site. New forces will join them if necessary, Kzmalyan says.
Khzmalyan says that from now on the civil society will no longer put up with the outrage. He thinks that youth have become the core of the civil movement for the first time over the past 25 years. Today the coming generation focuses its attention not only on the construction of the multi-storey building in Komitas Street, but also on the growth in tuition fee in universities, as well as on paid parking in Yerevan.
He also recalls that earlier the public made efforts to stop the project on demolition of the Summer Hall of Moscow Cinema, as well as the construction in Mashtots Park. As regards the cases of the law-enforcers' violence against the activists, Khzmalyan doubts that the incumbent power will consider those cases. In the meantime, he has stressed that the activists perfectly know the names of the provokers and those who delivered orders.
To recall, the actions of protest against construction in Komitas Street have been held for several days. In his August 26 speech, Armenian Human Rights
Defender Karen Andreasyan expressed his disappointment in the emotional and unprofessional behavior of some policemen during the Aug 24 incident in Komitas Street. The Human Rights Defender is going to find out the adequacy of the police's physical violence against journalist Argishti Kiviryan and other activists.
