ArmInfo.Europe cannot turn a blind eye to the humanitarian crisis at its borders. Thus, former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen commented on his visit to the entrance to the Berdzor (Lachin) corridor, which has been illegally blocked by Azerbaijan for 93 days already.
"Today I visited the Lachin corridor. This is the only road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia and the outside world," Rasmussen said. In this vein, he recalled that in December last year, the corridor was blocked by the Azerbaijanis. He confirmed that since then, neither civilian nor commercial traffic has been able to reach Nagorno-Karabakh.
"This has left about 120,000 residents without access to essential goods and services, including life-saving medicines and health care. Europe cannot turn a blind eye to the humanitarian crisis taking place at our borders. The EU should use its relationship with Azerbaijan and push it to lift the blockade and fulfill its international obligations. If we don't, a humanitarian crisis could turn into a humanitarian disaster," the former NATO Secretary General summed up.
Azerbaijan blocked the only road connecting Artsakh with the outside world on December 12 last year. The supply of electricity from Armenia to Artsakh was disrupted. Moreover, the Azerbaijani side systematically disrupts the gas supply to the NKR. Citizens are deprived of elementary human rights, including freedom of movement, medical services, education, etc.
