ArmInfo. On November 26, the Centrist Democrat International has issued a statement on the situation in Armenia, Armen Ashotyan, Vice-Chairman of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), has reported.
The statement reads:
"The IDC-CDI has observed with great concern the recent trend of democratic backsliding in Armenia.
"In particular, we condemn the sudden and outrageous travel ban imposed without proper legal notice on Armen Ashotyan, the Vice President of the Republican Party of Armenia, member part of IDC-CDI, at the airport in Yerevan.
"According to the reports, the Constitution, laws and regulations of Armenia are blatantly violated. Free movement of people is a universal right guaranteed also by the Armenian Constitution and could be restricted under exceptional circumstances, which are not justified in this case.
"The IDC-CDI reminds the Armenian authorities of their full responsibility for ensuring fundamental rights - such as freedom - democracy and rule of law in the country.
"We call on the Armenian government to stop politically motivated fabrications and to avoid further abuse of law-enforcement agencies' power on opponents.
"We will closely monitor the situation to ensure that universal rights and principles are respected."
