ArmInfo. The Armenian-Azerbaijani border should be demarcated on the basis of the Soviet-era maps at the disposal of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Valentina Matviyenko, Chairwoman of the Federation Council, RF Federal Assembly, stated at her meeting with Speaker of the Parliament of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova, in Saint Petersburg.
"Russia has offered its help as the Soviet-era maps are only at our disposal - at the Ministry of Defense. The maps are accurate and clearly show the Armenian-Azerbaijani borders. Negotiations can be conducted with confidence base on the maps, an both Armenia and Azerbaijan are supportive of this approach," Interfax-Azwrbaijan reports quoting Ms Matviyenko as saying.
No other documents clearly showing the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan are available.
"But the negotiations are not an easy process. With understanding and agreements present, the process itself is slowly progressing. The result is a somewhat palpable tension. We are interested in peace and stability in the South Caucasus and we`ll be doing our best for that," Matviyenko said.
The major task is to demarcate the border in such a way that no one want to resume hostilities.
In her turn, Gafarova said that Azerbaijan`s aim is regional peace and stability.
It is noteworthy that the report on Valentina Matviyenko`s meeting with Sahiba Gafarova on the official website of the Council of Federation does not contain any mention of demarcation of the Armenian- Azerbaijani border or Armenian-Azerbaijani relations.
