ArmInfo. The conflict, tension between Armenia and Azerbaijan continues to be a powerful trump card in the hands of Russia. Georgian political scientist Gela Vasadze expressed a similar opinion to ArmInfo.
" Moscow has been interested, let's just say, in keeping this conflict afloat, throughout the entire history of the conflict, since its outset. In this light, the fact that today it is Russia that is interested in its preservation cannot be doubted. And of course, it's not a coincidence. Today Moscow is in the process of reformatting and renewing relations with both Yerevan and Baku and, of course, strives to deepen and strengthen them," he stressed.
At the same time, the political scientist expressed his conviction that the continuation of the confrontation in no way proceeds from the interests of Armenia, which is just beginning to move away from the consequences of last year's war. It also does not correspond to the interests of Azerbaijan, for which it is now extremely important to achieve the opening of a corridor to Nakhichevan. Meanwhile, the conflict, according to Vasadze, in no way favors such plans of Baku.
The conflict, according to his estimates, is not in the interests of the United States, France and even Turkey. First of all, due to the lack of prospects for them to receive any political profits as a result of the aggravation of the situation between Armenia and Azerbaijan. And the EU, in turn, according to Vasadze, is a player providing technical assistance, financial injections, promoting the development of democracy, but not a provider of security.
The political scientist views European initiatives to provide assistance in billions of euros to Armenia and Georgia in this light. In this context, Vasadze noted the absence of any signs of readiness in the EU as a whole, and in any European country in particular, to use military force in the South Caucasus, without which talking about ensuring security, in his opinion, is meaningless.
In any case, according to his estimates, the EU's interest in the South Caucasus in the light of the important role of the region in the system of communications between the markets of Asia and Europe is evident today. Especially against the background of the ongoing reformatting of the region, which is quite an interesting process, in which all its parties have their own political tools. It is also clear that in the case of the EU, this is program financing to maintain stability in the region, contributing to the formation of alternatives for Europe for gas supplies.
"The recent visit of President of the European Council Charles Michel to all three countries of the South Caucasus indicates that the European Union will be present where its presence is welcomed. Nevertheless, I would not associate any hopes with the possibility of Brussels' involvement in the Karabakh conflict settlement process. The EU is about money, technology and democracy. The EU is not about war. And in this light, I assess the role of the EU in the settlement of the Karabakh conflict as symbolic, but nothing more," Vasadze summed up.
