ArmInfo. There is no such subject as sex education in schools. Lusine Aleksanyan, responsible for the section "Healthy Lifestyle and Me" in the school curriculum, said this in an interview with ArmInfo correspondent.
She noted that in schools, textbooks on social studies and anatomy will include a section "Healthy Lifestyle and Me". , Aleksanyan emphasized.
Aleksanyan also noted that issues related to healthy relationships will be taught directly in high school and will be included in the anatomy section. More detailed questions regarding the relationship between the sexes will be taught directly in high school, from grades 9 to 12. The introduction of this section will help children to better orient themselves and will have a positive effect on their general educational level, "Aleksanyan noted.
She also emphasized that in the textbooks on anatomy, there were previously sections related to human sexuality and relationships between the sexes.
It should be noted that the Armenian parliament at the meeting on May 11 approved a bill signed in Lanzarote on the ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse. The CE Convention was adopted on October 25, 2007 and entered into force on July 1, 2010. It was signed by 47 countries and entered into force in 45 states. The Republic of Armenia signed the Convention on September 29, 2010.
The Convention, by setting common standards and definitions applicable in all European countries, aims to protect children from sexual exploitation and abuse. The objectives of the Convention are to prevent and combat the sexual exploitation of children and sexual abuse, to protect the rights of children who have suffered from sexual crimes, and to stimulate domestic and international cooperation in the fight against sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of children.
By ratifying this Convention, the Republic of Armenia undertakes to take the necessary legislative or other measures to prevent all forms of sexual exploitation and use of children, as well as to protect children, including developing and implementing appropriate mechanisms, especially in the fields of education, health care, social services, as well as in law enforcement and judicial authorities. Cooperation between the States parties to the Convention will be carried out with the aim of preventing and combating the sexual exploitation and abuse of children, protecting and assisting victims of violence, conducting investigations and proceedings as provided for by the Convention.
Thus, the ratification of the Convention will create an opportunity to introduce relevant legislative amendments in Armenia aimed at combating the sexual exploitation of children and sexual violence, protecting the rights of children who have suffered from sexual exploitation and sexual abuse. Moreover, the ratification of the Convention will promote the prioritization of the best interests of the child in all actions for children, and stimulate international cooperation between the parties to the Convention.
